One of the things I struggled with when we first completed our DIY builtins, was the fact that there were so many of them!! I mean seriously…18 shelves that I needed to style and make look cohesive. It doesn’t seem like it would be that big of a deal, but once I started placing items on the shelves, I started to panic. This was going to be harder than it looked! Why do all those people on Pinterest and Instagram make it look so easy? Well, it is NOT! I am going to share a few tips that I have learned along the way, to help give you a cohesive and non-cluttered display when styling your builtins/shelves.
First is to repeat colors and textures throughout the shelves. That way your eye doesn’t settle on one area.
If you notice on how I styled my shelves, I repeat the use of natural elements and wood.
Since I have a wall of builtins, with the fireplace in the center, I repeat the same textures on the opposite side. They are not exactly the same, but are not competing for your attention. Your eyes should flow over and not feel drawn to one particular shelf.
Lastly, I do not create a vignette on each shelf. Because I have so many shelves, I don’t think this would look the best in my space and would create a cluttered appearance. So I keep it simple and let one larger scale item sit on majority of my shelves, with a few vignettes thrown in the mix.
There are no hard fast rules…so decorate away!! Do what works for you! I clear all my shelves off and make a pile of all the decor items I am going to use, in the floor. I then start placing items and by trial and error come up with something.
Oh and baskets….baskets full of anything are always a good thing! Do you have any styling tricks that you would like to share?!
